OUR WINES
ORIGIN
LA RIOJA'S BEGINNING as a wine-growing region goes back to Roman times, when cultivating grapevines was introduced. Over time and due to, among other factors, the fact that the Camino de Santiago (St.James Way) runs through this region, wine growing took root, especially around the monasteries that began to make wine to do business with pilgrims.
Although Rioja wine as been held in high esteem and demand, through laws that have regulated its sale and production, it is in 1925 when the current production area was formed, being the first Spanish region to obtain a Denominación de Origen (D.O.). Subsequently, this region introduced a unique and original system of aging, which led to the classification of wines into crianzas, reservas and grandes reserves (based on how long the wine is aged) which is currently used by practically all of the quality wine-growing areas of Spain.
In the last decade of the previous century, Rioja wine growing has undergone profound changes in order to become profitable and competitive in an international market, while at the same time maintaining the same quality and singularity that has always characterized its wines. Furthermore, since 1991, it is the first Denominación de Origen to be considered “Calificada” (D.O.Ca.), which indicates that all the wine produced in this D.O. is sold in bottles, as proof of its quality.
